A fire last week in downtown Gaines destroyed the Greene family's home. Today, the Greenes are thanking friends and neighbors for the outpouring of support since that fire, including Allstate Insurance agent, Christi Johnson, who Connie Greene noted is allowing the family to occupy some space in her office building on Oak Street for temporary storage. The Greenes' home was determined to be a total loss.

The family is currently staying in a hotel but is looking for a 3 or 4 bedroom rental home in the Gaines or Byron area to move into while their home is rebuilt.

The Greenes' insurance company will pay for a six month lease and then month-to-month, Greene said, adding the insurance company will work directly with the landlord.

Any help spreading the word is appreciated. A Facebook fundraiser has been set up for the Greenes, and the family and organizers can be reached though that page.

Shiawassee Radio Episode 13: When It's A Tie at the Railroad Crossing...

There's an old saying: When it's a tie at the railroad crossing... you lose. The Railroaders are headed to the football playoffs for the first time since 2009. The team gains entry after tying Imlay City to the thousandth decimal place in scoring, including tie-breakers. So, for the first time in MHSAA history, it came down to a coin toss. Josh Strickland talks to Durand Athletic Director, Bryan Carpenter, about what brought the team here, playoff prep and program history.

Who owns the dam?

It's a question that people have been asking for at least forty years. But how we got to that point -- and to this point, the impending disappearance of that cherished old friend, is actually a pretty fascinating ride.
