Sheriff Brian BeGole's personal Facebook page was converted to an online memorial after someone reported to the social media giant that he had passed away.

This death hoax came just days after BeGole told WJRT-TV that members of his department have received death threats in connection with content posted to a Facebook page that listens to Shiawassee law enforcement scanner traffic and reposts the information.  The page, entitled Shiawassee County Neighborhood Watch, often posts colorful commentary about 911 calls received by Central Dispatch, and has recently shared posts critical of BeGole and department practices.

BeGole told WLNS-TV that the page spreads "outright and blatant lies and it's wrong."

Though they wished to remain anonymous, the admin(s) of the Facebook page in question allegedly told WILX-TV that the page "exists to keep the community informed and give people a voice."

BeGole said he respects that and said that he wasn't looking to have the page shut down, but added "when you intentionally put the false information out there -- the blatant lies designed to harass, intimidate, or threaten people -- you've crossed the line and that's illegal."

Sheriff BeGole is alive and Facebook has restored his page.

With returned access to his own Facebook page, Sheriff BeGole is also able to communicate with those following the Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office Facebook page again.  Today the Sheriff's office warned residents of a new phone scam.  Read about that here.
